Jotun

Dalam mitologi Nordik, Jotun adalah raksasa, ras manusia perkasa dan memiliki ukuran tubuh yang besar dan kekuatan menakjubkan. Mereka bertikai dan bermusuhan dengan para Dewa, meskipun di antara mereka ada yang menikahi para Dewa. Benteng terkuat mereka bernama Utgard, terletak di suatu tempat yang disebut Jötunheimr, dunia para Jotun, salah satu di antara sembilan dunia dalam kosmologi Norwegia. Dunia para raksasa, Jotunheimr, terpisah dengan dunia manusia, Midgard dan dibatasi oleh pegunungan tinggi dan hutan belantara. Jotun yang tidak tinggal di Jötunheimr biasanya tinggal di gua-gua dan di tempat-tempat yang gelap.

Dalam bahasa Norwegia kuno, mereka disebut ‘’’Jötnar’’’ (tunggal: Jötunn), atau ‘’’Risar’’’ (tunggal: Risi), kadangkala disebut ‘’’Bergrisar’’’, atau ‘’’Þhursar’’’ (baca: Thursar; tunggal: þhurs). Kaum raksasa berjenis kelamin wanita disebut Gýgr.
