John Sidel

John Thayer Sidel (lahir 1966) adalah seorang pakar politik dan salah satu profesor internasional dan politik komparatif Sir Patrick Gillam di London School of Economics (LSE), dan berafiliasi dengan Departemen Pemerintahan dan Hubungan Internasional, serta dengan Pusat Penelitian Asia.

Dia lahir pada tanggal 4 Juni 1966 di Kota New York. Dia meraih gelar sarjana (Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) dan magister dalam ilmu politik pada tahun 1988 dari Universitas Yale, tempat dia bekerja sama dengan James C. Scott. Ia kemudian menerima gelar PhD pada tahun 1995 dari Universitas Cornell dan bekerja di bawah pengawasan Benedict Anderson. Sidel mengajar di School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), Universitas London, awalnya sebagai dosen dalam bidang politik Asia Tenggara (1994 hingga 2001) dan kemudian sebagai pembaca dalam bidang politik Asia Tenggara (2001 hingga 2004).

Sidel telah menulis beberapa buku, sekumpulan artikel jurnal, dan esai dalam volume yang telah disunting, serta menjabat sebagai salah satu editor untuk Contemporary Issues in Asia and the Pacific Series di Stanford University Press.^[1] Ia juga merupakan salah satu anggota dari komite penyuntingan untuk jurnal penelitian Asia Tenggara, Indonesia, dan Dunia Melayu. Dia sering kali menjadi komentator di media dan menjadi konsultan di berbagai organisasi pemerintahan, yayasan, dan lembaga swadaya masyarakat.^[2]
