John Emil Peurifoy (9 Agustus 1907 – 12 Agustus 1955) adalah seorang diplomat dan duta besar Amerika pada masa-masa awal Perang Dingin. Ia menjabat sebagai Dubes AS di Yunani dan Thailand dan menjadi Dubes AS untuk Guatemala pada masa kudeta tahun 1954 yang melengserkan pemerintahan demokratis Jacobo Arbenz.

Kehidupan awal dan karya

Peurifoy lahir di Walterboro, South Carolina pada 9 Agustus 1907.^[1] Keluarganya yang terdiri dari pengacara dan juri pengadilan datang ke Dunia Baru pada tahun 1619, dua tahun sebelum kedatangan Mayflower.^[1] Ibunya Emily Wright wafat saat ia berusia enam tahun, dan ayahnya John H. Peurifoy wafat pada Desember 1926.^[2]^[3] Saat ia lulus dari perguruan tinggi pada 1926, buku tahunan mencatat ambisinya untuk menjadi Presiden Amerika Serikat.^[1] Peurifoy meraih sebuah pelantikan untuk West Point pada 1926. Ia menarik diri dari akademi militer tersebut setelah dua tahun karena terserang pneumonia.^[1]
