John Mott

John Raleigh Mott, tahun 1946

John Raleigh Mott (lahir 25 Mei 1865 – mati 31 Januari 1955) adalah seorang tokoh penginjilan di kalangan mahasiswa di berbagai universitas di Amerika Serikat pada akhir abad ke-19 dan awal abad ke-20.[1] Mott dikenal juga sebagai tokoh ekumene dunia karena turut berperan dalam pembentukan "Dewan Gereja se-Dunia" (World Church Organization).[1][2]

Riwayat Hidup

Mott pada tahun 1910

Mott dilahirkan tanggal 25 Mei 1865 di Livingston Manor, New York, Amerika Serikat.[3] Ketika ia berusia 2 tahun, ayahnya, John Stitt Moot beserta seluruh keluarganya pindah ke Postville, Iowa.[3] Ia mulai bergabung ke dalam Gereja Metodis pada usia 13 tahun.[3] Tahun 1881, Mott belajar di Universitas Upper Iowa.[1] Setelah itu, Mott melanjutkan studi ke Universitas Cornell, dan di sinilah ia memulai pekerjaan pekabaran Injil.[1] Mott masuk ke Universitas Cornell pada tahun 1885, tepat ketika usianya beranjak 20 tahun.[3] Di universitas ini jugalah Mott terpilih sebagai wakil ketua "Asosiasi Pemuda Kristen" (Young Men Christian Association) cabang Cornell.[1] Setelah tamat dari Cornell, ia menjadi sekretaris "Asosiasi Pemuda Kristen" Amerika Serikat dan Kanada.[1] Ia mengunjungi seluruh universitas dan perguruan tinggi di kedua negara tersebut.[1] Mott dikenal sebagai tokoh ekumene dunia karena turut berperan dalam pembentukan "Dewan Gereja se-Dunia" (World Church Organization).[1][2] Mott menerima Hadiah Nobel Perdamaian pada tahun 1946 untuk karyanya membangun dan menguatkan organisasi-organisasi pelajar/mahasiswa Kristen Protestan internasional yang bekerja untuk menegakkan perdamaian.
