Menegakkan bendera di Iwo Jima

Joe Rosenthal (9 Oktober 1911 – 20 Agustus 2006) adalah seorang juru foto Yahudi Amerika, yang mendapatkan Penghargaan Pulitzer untuk fotonya yang menjadi lambang Perang Dunia II, yang mengabadikan pasukan-pasukan Amerika menegakkan bendera di Gunung Suribachi dalam Pertempuran Iwo Jima.

Rosenthal dilahirkan di Washington, D.C.. Minatnya terhadap fotografi dimulai sebagai hobi. Ia pindah ke San Francisco, California pada masa Depresi Besar dan tinggal bersama kakaknya sementara ia mencari pekerjaan. Ia menjadi wartawan dan juru foto untuk San Francisco News pada 1932.

Rosenthal ditolak oleh Angkatan Darat sebagai juru foto karena pandangan matanya yang kurang awas. Sebab itu ia bergabung dengan Associated Press dan ikut serta dengan Marinir di Medan Operasi Pasifik pada masa perang tersebut. Fotonya yang menggambarkan lima orang marinir dan seorang Angkatan Laut sedang menegakkan bendera di Gunung Suribachi ("Menegakkan Bendera di Iwo Jima") menjadi salah satu foto yang paling terkenal tentang perang ini. Hak cipta foto ini dimiliki oleh Associated Press.

Tahun 1945 ia meninggalkan AP dan bekerja sebagai juru foto untuk San Francisco Chronicle. Ia bekerja di sana selam 35 tahun, lalu pensiun.

Rosenthal banyak diwawancarai setelah tragedi 11 September 2001 ketika Thomas E. Franklin merekam sebuah foto yang serupa yang menggambarkan Semangat Titik Nol. Foto ini melukiskan tiga pasukan pemadam kebakaran sedang berusaha menegakkan bendera di World Trade Center. Rosenthal dan Franklin bertemu beberapa kali setelah kejadian itu.

Rosenthal meninggal dunia pada 20 Agustus 2006, karena sakit tua di sebuah pusat perawatan di kota Novato, tidak begitu jauh dari San Francisco. Ia berusia 94 tahun.
