Jidaigeki

Jidaigeki (時代劇, drama zaman) adalah genre drama televisi, teater, dan film Jepang yang berlatar belakang cerita pada zaman Edo pra-Restorasi Meiji (1603-1868) atau periode sebelumnya dalam sejarah Jepang.[1] Teater, film dan drama televisi Jepang secara garis besar dibagi menjadi dua kategori: jidaigeki (pra-Restorasi Meiji) dan gendaigeki (pasca-Restorasi Meiji).[2]

Film chambara atau di luar Jepang disebut film samurai adalah salah satu jenis dari jidaigeki. Film samurai adalah film jidaigeki yang berakhir dengan klimaks berupa pertarungan pedang (kengeki) yang jurus-jurusnya dipelopori oleh grup teater Shinkokugeki.[3] Ciri khas film samurai adalah banyaknya bunyi pedang beradu yang dalam bahasa Jepang terdengar seperti chanchan barabara sehingga dalam bahasa Jepang, film jenis ini disebut film chanbara (chambara).[4]
