Jean Domat

Jean Domat adalah seorang sarjana hukum berkebangsaan Prancis abad ke-17 (pada masa pemerintahan Louis XIV, raja yang menyempurnakan praktik absolutisme kerajaan).[1][2] Ada juga yang mengeja namannya dengan Daumat.[3] Dia lahir pada tanggal 30 November 1625 di Clermont, Auvergne dan meninggal di Paris saat 14 Maret tahun 1696.[1]

Salah satu tulisannya yang terkenal adalah Les lois civiles dans leur ordre naturel yang mempunyai tebal 5 jilid dan terbit sekitar tahun 1689 - 1697.[1] Buku ini disusun secara sistematis berdasarkan falsafat Kristen.[1] Selain itu, buku ini sangatlah berpengaruh dalam mempengaruhi perkembangan hukum Prancis pada umumnya, sedang khususnya dalam hal susunannya, terutama pada abad ke-18.[1] Domat menjelaskan teori absolutisme yang dia buat dengan cara menetapkan hukum Prancis dan struktur sosialnya dengan konteks yang lebih luas daripada hukum alam, maupun hukum Tuhan.[2] Penyajian hukum miliknya dianggap sebagai suatu sistem yang berasal dari teori etika dan teologi alam.[3]
