Jenis jari-jari atom

Jari-jari van der Waals, rw, dari suatu atom adalah jari-jari dari sebuah bola keras imajiner yang merupakan jarak pendekatan terdekat untuk atom lain. Jari-jari ini dinamakan sesuai Johannes Diderik van der Waals, pemenang Hadiah Nobel dalam Fisika 1910, karena dia adalah orang pertama yang menyadari bahwa atom tidak hanya titik dan menunjukkan konsekuensi fisik dari ukuran mereka melalui persamaan keadaan van der Waals.

Volume van der Waals

Volume van der Waals, Vw, juga disebut volume atom atau volume molekul, adalah sifat atom yang paling langsung berhubungan dengan jari-jari van der Waals. Ia adalah volume "yang terisi" oleh atom sendiri (atau molekul). Volume van der Waals dapat dihitung jika jari-jari van der Waals (dan, untuk molekul, jarak dan sudut antaratom) diketahui. Untuk atom tunggal berbentuk bola, ini adalah volume bola yang jari-jarinya adalah jari-jari van der Waals dari atom tersebut:

Untuk sebuah molekul, volume ini adalah volume yang ditutupi oleh permukaan van der Waals. Volume van der Waals dari sebuah molekul selalu lebih kecil daripada jumlah volume van der Waals dari atom-atom penyusunnya: atom dapat dikatakan "tumpang tindih" saat mereka membentuk ikatan kimia.
