James Last (17 April 1929 – 9 Juni 2015) adalah komponis Jerman dan pemimpin big band. Album-album laris yang diproduksinya telah menghasilkan lebih dari 300 piringan perak, emas, dan platina.[1] Lagu-lagu yang sedang hit diseleksinya dan diaransemen ulang untuk orkestra. James Last Orchestra yang dipimpinnya telah memainkan berbagai irama musik, mulai dari tema film Rocky, hingga lagu-lagu Bob Dylan dan Nirvana.

Karier

Dia bermain piano sejak masih kanak-kanak sebelum beralih ke double bass ketika remaja. Sekolah musik militer milik Wehrmacht di Bückeburg dimasukinya ketika berusia 14 untuk belajar kontrabass. Pada tahun 1946, Last berusia 17 tahun ketika bergabung dengan orkestra dansa Radio Bremen pimpinan Hans-Gunther Österreich. Pada 1948, ia membentuk Last-Becker Ensemble bersama dua orang kakaknya, Robert dan Werner yang juga pemusik. Ia bermain musik di klab-klab tentara dan dikenal sebagai pemain bass musik jazz. Kemahiran bermain bass membuatnya terpilih sebagai pemain jazz top Jerman selama 3 tahun berturut-turut, dari 1950 hingga 1952.

Pada tahun 1955, dia bergabung dengan North German Radio Dance Orchestra dan menikah. Sepanjang dekade 1960-an, James Last menulis aransemen untuk artis seperti Helmut Zacharias, Freddy Quinn, Lolita, Alfred Hause, dan Caterina Valente.

Album pertama James Last di Amerika Serikat adalah The American Patrol dari Warner Brothers (1964). Ia juga merilis satu set album yang terdiri dari 9 volume, Classics Up To Date vols. 1–9. Di dalamnya berisi lagu-lagu instrumental tahun 1960-an hingga awal 1970-an. James Last mulai dikenal di Eropa pada tahun 1968 berkat album Non-Stop Dancing. Sepanjang 40 tahun kariernya, James Last telah memproduksi lebih dari 190 album rekaman, termasuk beberapa volume seri Non-Stop Dancing. Dalam album-albumnya, ia sering memasukkan lagu-lagu dari berbagai negara dan genre. Selain itu, ia sering mengundang pemusik tamu untuk bermain untuknya. Ia pernah mengajak Richard Clayderman dan Astrud Gilberto untuk bermain baginya. Pada 1970-an, James Last membintangi drama serial dengan bintang tamu ABBA dan Lynsey de Paul.

Last tinggal di Florida dan Hamberg, Jerman. Dia meninggal pada tanggal 9 Juni 2015 di Palm Beach, Florida pada usia 86.[2][3]
