Istal

Istal sederhana yang terdiri dari beberapa ruangan

Istal atau ari^[1] adalah bangunan yang digunakan untuk menyimpan kuda (kandang) dan sebagai tempat kuda beraktivitas seperti makan dan tidur. Istal biasanya berupa bangunan dengan banyak ruangan di dalamnya yang terpisah dengan sekat atau dinding untuk pemisah antar kuda.

Desain bangunan bisa bervariasi tergantung iklim, budaya, kemudahan mendapatkan bahan bangunan, dan fungsi selain sebagai kandang, karena beberapa istal ada yang difungsikan sebagai tempat untuk memamerkan kuda yang akan dijual atau dipacu di pacuan kuda. Selain itu, istal yang difungsikan untuk menyimpan hewan militer bisa memiliki fasilitas tambahan untuk memasang zirah.

Sejarah

Kuda telah lama digunakan sebagai penyedia tenaga pertanian, terutama sebagai tenaga penarik gerobak untuk mengangkut hasil pertanian dan sebagai alat tunggangan. Dan jika kuda sudah cukup tua untuk bekerja, mereka akan disembelih untuk dimanfaatkan dagingnya. Mereka sangat berharga sehingga kandang mereka dibangun dekat dengan tempat tinggal pemiliknya. Bahkan tidak jarang istal memiliki fasilitas yang lebih baik dari kandang hewan ternak lainnya, seperti adanya tempat minum dan makan yang khusus tersedia untuk setiap ekor kuda.^[2]^[3]
