Intervensi militer Rusia di Suriah, dalam konteks Perang Saudara Suriah, dimulai pada 30 September 2015. Intervensi ini dilakukan dalam bentuk serangan udara oleh Rusia terhadap Negara Islam Irak dan Syam, al-Qaeda di Syam dan musuh-musuh lain dari pemerintah Suriah. Sebelum intervensi, keterlibatan Rusia dalam Perang Saudara Suriah adalah mempersenjatai Tentara Suriah.[29] Rusia turun tangan setelah permintaan resmi dari pemerintah Suriah untuk bantuan militer terhadap pemberontak dan kelompok teroris di Suriah.[30] Amerika Serikat terus bersikeras bahwa Presiden Suriah, Bashar al-Assad harus mundur dan berjanji memberi dukungan kepada Tentara Pembebasan Suriah.[31]

Perang Saudara Suriah sedang berlangsung antara kelompok "oposisi" dan "pemerintah" dan masing-masing memiliki basis dukungan lokal dan asing. Setelah hampir satu tahun peristiwa serangan udara yang dilakukan oleh intervensi pimpinan Amerika Serikat tidak berhasil melawan ISIS,[32] Rusia, sekutu Suriah, mulai mengirimkan pesawat tempur dan peralatannya sendiri ke sebuah pangkalan udara di dekat kota pelabuhan Latakia, Suriah. Rusia mengumumkan koalisi sendiri untuk melawan ISIS bersama dengan Iran, Irak dan Suriah.[33]

Pada 30 September 2015, majelis tinggi parlemen Rusia, Dewan Federasi, menyetujui permintaan Presiden Vladimir Putin untuk mengirimkan Angkatan Udara Rusia di Suriah.[34] Pemerintah Suriah mengirim permintaan resmi ke Rusia untuk bantuan militer, setelah Rusia menjawabnya dengan rangkaian pertama serangan udara terhadap gerilyawan.[34]

Rangkaian pertama dari serangan udara berlangsung pada 30 September 2015 di daerah sekitar kota-kota Homs dan Hama, menargetkan oposisi utama.[35] Pesawat tempur Rusia menyerang posisi pemberontak "di Ar-Rastan, Talbisa dan Zafaraniya di provinsi Homs; Al-Tilol al-Hmer di provinsi Quneitra; Aydoun, sebuah desa di pinggiran kota As-Salamiyah; Deer Foul, antara Hama dan Homs; dan pinggiran As-Salamiyah."[36] Secara total, 20 penerbangan dibuat.[37]

Menurut saluran media Hizbullah, Al Mayadeen, Tentara Penakluk disekitar Jisr ash-Shugour dibom pada 1 Oktober oleh pesawat Rusia; setidaknya 30 serangan udara dilakukan.[5] Rangkaian lain dari serangan udara Rusia dilakukan pada hari yang sama terhadap ISIL di Kegubernuran Ar-Raqqah.[1] Pada tanggal 3 Oktober 2015, laporan menunjukkan bahwa Hizbullah dan pejuang Iran sedang mempersiapkan serangan darat besar yang akan dikoordinasikan dengan serangan udara Rusia.[38]
