Harpadon nehereus, disebut juga sebagai ikan itik bombay atau ikan luli atau nomei adalah spesies ikan kadal . Spesies dewasa dapat mencapai panjang maksimum 40 cm (16 in), tetapi ukuran biasanya sekitar 25 cm (10 in) .[2]

Etimologi

Pada masa-masa awal ikan itik bombay yang ditangkap di Bombay biasa terbuang. Namun, ikan ini dianggap sebagai makanan lezat di Bengal. Saat kereta api memulai perjalanannya di India, ikan ini diangkut dari Bombay ke Calcutta. Karena biasa diangkut dengan kereta surat, ikan tersebut diberi nama Bombay Mail fish (disingkat menjadi Bombail atau Bombil) atau Bombay Daak (Daak adalah surat dalam bahasa Bengali). Beberapa mengklaim bahwa nama ini diberikan oleh seorang pejabat Inggris (mungkin Robert Clive, disebutkan kemudian) yang membenci bau ikan yang menyengat di kereta. Menurut cerita lokal Bangladesh , istilah ikan itik Bombay pertama kali diciptakan oleh Robert Clive, setelah ia mencicipi sepotong selama penaklukannya dari Bengal . Dia dikatakan mengaitkan bau menyengat dengan bau surat kabar dan surat yang akan datang ke kanton dari Bombay. Istilah ini kemudian dipopulerkan di kalangan masyarakat Inggris dengan kemunculannya di restoran India di Inggris.

Dalam buku puisi dan "kenangan India" tahun 1829, Sir Toby Rendrag (nama samaran) mencatat "penggunaan ikan yang diberi nama 'itik Bombay'" [3] dan frasa tersebut digunakan dalam teks sejak tahun 1815.[4]
