Hyperboreoi

Hyperborei (dalam bahasa Yunani Kuno: Ὑπερϐόρεοι) merupakan nama sebuah ras raksasa dalam sejarah kuno yang hidup melalui nafas dingin Boreas[1] (angin utara).

Penyebutan pertama Hyperborei terjadi pada abad ke-8 SM dalam Epigonoi dan Hesiodos.[2] Alkaios[3] menyebutkan angsa suci yang membawa Apollo, setelah kelahirannya, dari Delos ke wilayah Hyperborei, dan dari sana, pada akhir tahun, tiba di Delphi. Bangsa Yunani menghubungkan Hyperborei dan Boreas.[4] Namun adalah hal yang mustahil untuk menemukan Hyperborei, yang disebut oleh bangsa Yunani semacam surga yang jauh dan tidak jelas. Pada sekitar tahun 470 SM, kultus baru yang didedikasikan untuk dewa Apollo Hyperborei, di Metapontum, Italia, seperti yang ditunjukkan dalam uang logam[5] dan kesaksian Herodotos.[6]

Yang pertama-tama mempelajari Hyperborei adalah Johann Matthias Gesner, pada tahun 1759.[7] Pada sekitar tahun 1890, seorang sejarahwan terkenal Erwin Rohde, menandai hubungan antara Abaris dan Aristeas di satu sisi dan Hyperborei di sisi lain.[8] Tahap baru: Karl Meuli, mulai dari hubungan antara bangsa Yunani dan bangsa Skithia, dan Abaris dari Hyperboreia, menafsirkan sebagai Syamanisme yang diwakili oleh karakter yang agak ajaib ini.[9]

H. P. Blavatsky menggambarkan Hyperborei serta benua Hyperborei, dalam Teosofi.[10]
