Hou Yao (1903–1942) adalah seorang sutradara, penulis naskah dan pakar teori film pionir asal Tiongkok. Ia menulis dan menyutradarai banyak film yang meliputi The Discarded Wife (1924), Romance of the Western Chamber (1927), film Tiongkok pertama yang ditayangkan di negara-negara Barat dan Mulan Joins the Army (1928). Ia menulis Techniques of Writing Shadowplay Scripts, buku teori pertama tentang pembuatan film Tiongkok. Ia mendirikan Culture Film Company, yang digabung dengan pendahulunya Shaw Brothers Studio. Ia disebut sebagai Henrik Ibsen dari Tiongkok karena advokasinya terhadap kesetaraan gender, yang ia lakukan dengan istrinya Pu Shunqing.
Setelah Kekaisaran Jepang menginvasi Tiongkok pada 1937, Hou Yao menulis dan menyutradarai serangakaian film patriotik melawan agresi Jepang. Pada 1942, ia dibunuh oleh Jepang dalam pembantaian Sook Ching di Singapura.
