Honshū

Honshu (本州, Honshū, arti harfiah: Provinsi Utama) adalah pulau terbesar Jepang. Letaknya di selatan Hokkaido, utara Shikoku di seberang Laut Pedalaman Seto, dan timur laut Kyushu di seberang Selat Kanmon. Jika diukur dengan seluruh dunia, Honshu merupakan pulau terbesar ketujuh di dunia dan pulau terpadat kedua di dunia setelah Jawa.

Jumlah penduduknya adalah 98.352.000 (pada 1990, 89.101.702 (1975)); kebanyakan bermukim di dataran rendah, terutama di Hamparan Kanto di mana 25% dari seluruh penduduk tinggal dan di sekitar Tokyo dan Yokohama. Kota lainnya termasuk Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima, Sendai, dan Nagoya. Pulau ini biasanya dibagi menjadi lima daerah dan berisi 34 prefektur, termasuk Tokyo metropolitan.

Daerah-daerah tersebut adalah Chubu (tengah), Chugoku (selatan), Kanto (timur), Kinki (selatan, di atas Chugoku), dan Tohoku (utara).

Pulau ini juga memiliki daerah pertanian yang penting. Niigata dikenal sebagai produsen beras penting. Hamparan Kanto dan Nobi memproduksi beras dan sayuran. Yamanashi adalah daerah penghasil buah-buahan utama, dan Aomori terkenal akan apelnya.

Geografi

Pulau ini memiliki panjang sekitar 1.300 km (810 mil) dan lebarnya berkisar antara 50 hingga 230 km (31 hingga 143 mil), dan luas totalnya adalah 230.500 km2 (88.020 mil persegi), sekitar 60% total luas wilayah.[1] honshu memiliki garis pantai 10.084 kilometer (6.266 mil).[1]

Honshu yang bergunung dan banyak mempunyai gunung berapi sering dilanda gempa bumi (peristiwa terbesarnya Gempa Bumi Besar Kanto pada September 1923). puncak tertingginya ada di Gunung Fuji (3.776 m) yang berapi dan masih aktif. Terdapat banyak sungai termasuk Sungai Shinano, sungai terpanjang di Jepang.

Prefektur

Pulau ini terbagi menjadi lima wilayah dan berisi 34 prefektur, termasuk kota Tokyo.
