Hipotesis Alvarez

Hipotesis Alvarez membayangkan bahwa peristiwa kepunahan massal dinosaurus non burung dan banyak organisme lainnya pada Peristiwa kepunahan Kapur–Paleogen terjadi karena peristiwa tumbukan sebuah asteroid besar di Bumi. Sebelum tahun 2013, umumnya peristiwa ini dikutip terjadi sekitar 65 juta tahun lalu, namun Renne et al. (2013) memberi estimasi waktu yang diperbarui, yaitu 66 juta tahun lalu.^[1] Bukti menunjukkan bahwa asteroid ini jatuh di Semenanjung Yukatan, Chicxulub, Meksiko. Hipotesis ini dinamai setelah pasangan ayah-anak Luis dan Walter Alvarez, yang pertama menyarankan hipotesis ini pada 1980. Tak lama setelah itu, secara independen, hipotesa yang sama juga diusulkan oleh paleontolog Belanda Jan Smit.^[2]

Pada Maret 2010, sekelompok ilmuwan dari seluruh dunia mendukung hipotesa ini sebagai alasan dari punahnya dinosaurus non burung dan organisme lainnya pada perbatasan K-Pg, dengan menunjuk Kawah Chicxulub sebagai lokasi mendaratnya asteroid. Sebuah tim yang terdiri dari 41 ilmuwan meninjau 20 tahun literatur ilmiah untuk membuktikan hipotesis ini, dan dalam prosesnya, mengesampingkan teori lain seperti vulkanisme. Mereka menentukan bahwa sebuah batu angkasa dengan diameter 10-15 km (sebagai perbandingan, Gunung Everest memiliki tinggi 9 km, sementara Phobos memiliki diameter 22 km) jatuh di Chicxulub, dan menghasilkan energi sebanyak 100.000.000 megaton TNT (4,2×10²³ J).^[3]

Proyek penggalian pada 2016 pada cincin puncak di kawah tersebut mendukung hipotesis ini lebih jauh, dan mengkonfirmasi berbagai jenis zat yang sebelumnya masih tidak jelas. Selain itu, proyek ini juga menemukan bahwa cincin puncaknya terdiri dari granit yang bukan merupakan batuan dasar laut, yang memiliki ciri terkena gaya kejut, meleleh dan terlempar ke permukaan dalam hitungan menit, beserta dengan bukti adanya pergerakan cepat dan hebat dari air laut yang diketahui dari deposit pasir. Sampel tanah dari area ini juga menunjukkan ketidakhadiran gipsum. Gipsum merupakan batuan yang mengandung sulfat, yang pasti akan menguap dan menyebar sebagai sebuah aerosol di atmosfer, memgkonfirmasi hubungan antara tumbukan ini dengan efek jangka panjangnya, yaitu pengaruhnya pada iklim dan rantai makanan global.
