Hipnosis ayam

Hipnosis ayam adalah metode untuk membuat seekor ayam masuk keadaan trance dengan cara memegang kepala ayam di atas tanah kemudian menarik garis lurus dari paruhnya ke arah menjauh. Ayam akan berhenti selama 15 detik sampai 30 menit sambil menatap garis itu. Kemungkinan hal ini bukanlah hipnosis dalam pengertian medis, namun naluri untuk berpura-pura mati.[1]

Teknik ini berguna bagi peternak yang akan menyembelih seekor ayam tanpa bantuan orang lain, atau untuk memberi makan binatang melata besar yang tidak dapat bergerak cepat untuk menangkap ayam. Rujukan terawal mengenai metode ini berasal dari tahun 1646, dalam buku Mirabile Experimentum de Imaginatione Gallinae oleh Athanasius Kircher. H. B. Gibson, dalam bukunya Hypnosis - its Nature and Therapeutic Uses, mengatakan bahwa rekor terlama hipnosis ayam adalah 3 jam 47 menit.[2]
