Hidrasi

Hidrasi adalah proses di mana ion dikelilingi oleh molekul-molekul air yang tersusun dalam keadaan tertentu.[1] Hidrasi membantu menstabilkan ion-ion dalam larutan dan mencegah kation untuk bergabung kembali dengan anion.[2] Hidrasi berbeda dengan Hidrolisis. Pada hidrolisis, biasanya molekul terpecah menjadi dua bagian. Rehidrasi adalah proses senyawaan kembali.[3] Sedangkan Dehidrasi adalah pembuangan molekul air dari senyawa atau reaksi kimia.[4] Pada medis Dehidrasi dikenal sebagai gangguan dalam keseimbangan cairan atau air pada tubuh.

Hidrasi Anion dan Kation

Hidrasi kation terjadi karena adanya antaraksi antara muatan positif kation dan pasangan elektron bebas dari atom oksigen dalam molekul air. Kation yang dapat dihidrasi adalah kation-kation lemah, seperti ion kalium (K+), yaitu kation yang memiliki ukuran besar dengan muatan listrik rendah. Kation-kation seperti ini berasal dari basa kuat, seperti Na+, K+, dan Ca2+. Contohnya:

K+(aq) + nH2O(l) ⇄ [K(H2O)n]+

Anion-anion yang dihidrasi adalah anion dari asam kuat atau anion yang bersifat basa konjugat sangat lemah. Anion-anion ini dihidrasi melalui antaraksi dengan atom hidrogen dari air. Misalnya:

NO3–(aq) + mH2O(l) ⇄ [NO3(H2O)m]–

Kation dan anion dari garam-garam yang terhidrasi di dalam air tidak bereaksi dengan molekul air. Oleh karena itu, anion atau kation seperti ini merupakan ion-ion bebas di dalam air.
