Hary Gunarto adalah seorang akademisi, dosen dan profesor dalam bidang studi Asia Pacific di Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Jepang.[2][3] Setelah lulus dari Universitas Gadjah Mada pada 1978, Hary Gunarto melanjutkan studi di negara Amerika Serikat dan mendapatkan gelar Master of Science dari Universitas Wisconsin–Madison, serta meraih gelar Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) dari Washington State University (WSU) pada tahun 1988.[4] Sejak lulus, Gunarto mengajar di WSU dan kemudian bekerja sebagai dosen di Universitas Gadjah Mada, serta menjadi dosen tamu di KFUPM, Saudi Arabia dan di Jepang. Dia dikenal banyak menulis buku dan artikel ilmiah,[5] dan pada awal tahun 2020, berhasil mendapatkan perhargaan sebagai Profesor Emeritus dari Universitas APU.[6]
