Danau Taupo di tengah Pulau Utara Selandia Baru merupakan kaldera supervolcano riolitik besar yang disebut gunung berapi Taupo. Gunung berapi besar ini telah memicu dua letusan terbesar di dunia pada masa geologi terkini.
Gunung berapi Taupo merupakan bagian dari Zona Vulkanik Taupo, sebuah kawasan vulkanik yang terbentang dari Gunung Ruapehu di selatan hingga Pulau White di Teluk Plenty.
Taupo mulai meletus sekitar 300.000 tahun yang lalu, tetapi letusan utama yang masih mempengaruhi bentang alam di sekitarnya adalah letusan Oruanui sekitar 26.500 tahun yang lalu yang telah membentuk kaldera Taupo. Letusan lainnya adalah letusan Hatepe sekitar 1.800 tahun yang lalu. Namun, mungkin telah terjadi beberapa letusan lain, dan letusan besar terjadi setiap seribu tahun.[1][2][3]
Gempa bumi dan deformasi tanah yang terjadi pada 2022 mengakibatkan status gunung api Taupo dinaikkan dari 0-1.
Pada Rabu, 30 November 2022 pukul 23:47 waktu setempat, Gempa bumi bermagnitudo 5.6 mengguncang Danau Taupo. Menurut GeoNet, Gempa berpusat pada kedalaman 5 km. Gempa ini menimbulkan tsunami kecil.
