Ginkgo biloba, yang dikenal sebagai ginkgo atau gingko dan juga dikenal sebagai pohon rambut gadis, adalah satu-satunya spesies yang masih hidup di divisi Ginkgophyta, semua spesies lainnya telah punah. Pohon ini dikenali mirip dengan fosil 270 juta tahun lalu. Berasal dari Tiongkok,[2] pohon ginkgo secara luas dibudidayakan dan diperkenalkan pada awal sejarah manusia. Pohon ini juga memiliki berbagai kegunaan dalam pengobatan tradisional dan sebagai sumber makanan.

Ginkgo biloba mengandung banyak senyawa bioaktif seperti terpenoid, flavonoid, biflavonoid, asam organik, poliprenol. Ginkgo biloba termasuk dalam daftar pengobatan tradisional Cina, yang telah digunakan selama bertahun-tahun untuk pengobatan asma, bronkitis, TBC, disfungsi kognitif, sakit perut[3]
