Gereja Paroki Santo Yosef (bahasa Malta: Knisja Parrokjali ta' San Ġużepp) adalah sebuah paroki Katolik yang ikonik, terletak di Manikata, Malta. Gereja ini didedikasikan untuk Santo Yosef. Gereja ini dirancang oleh Richard England pada tahun 1962, dan dibangun antara tahun 1964 dan 1974. Gereja ini menandai terobosan dari desain bangunan gereja tradisional, dan merupakan contoh dari regionalisme kritis. Bentuknya terinspirasi oleh girna, sebuah gubuk batu tradisional berbentuk lingkaran.

Sejarah

Kapel tua Manikata

Gereja pertama di desa Manikata adalah kapel kecil yang didedikasikan untuk Santo Yosef, dibangun pada tahun 1918.[1] Pada pertengahan abad ke-20, jumlah ini terlalu kecil untuk dipenuhi untuk pertumbuhan populasi desa, dan rencana dibuat untuk memperbesar kapel. Hal ini terbukti tidak praktis, sehingga pada tahun 1961 diputuskan untuk membangun gereja baru dan lebih besar di lokasi berbeda.[2]

Rektor Manwel Grima meminta arsitek Edwin England Sant Fournier untuk membuat rencana untuk gereja baru, namun arsitek tersebut mempercayakan pekerjaan tersebut kepada putranya Richard England,[2] menjadikan gereja sebagai tugas pertamanya. Inggris merancang bangunan ini pada tahun 1962, pada saat Konsili Vatikan Kedua sedang menyebabkan reformasi di Gereja Katolik. Reformasi yang bertujuan untuk memodernisasi Gereja ini terbukti menjadi sumber inspirasi konsep gedung gereja baru Inggris.[3] Kapasitas gedung gereja baru mencapai 700.[2]

Peletakan batu pertama dilakukan oleh Uskup Agung Mikiel Gonzi pada tanggal 16 Agustus 1964, di hadapan Perdana Menteri George Borg Olivier dan Menteri Joseph Spiteri.[1] Pembangunan gereja tersebut dilakukan dirusak oleh anggaran yang terbatas hanya £M20.000, kurangnya pekerja terampil, dan kematian Grima pada tahun 1971.[2] Diresmikan oleh Uskup Agung Gonzi pada tanggal 29 November 1974. Ini menjadi sebuah paroki gereja pada tanggal 16 Februari 1975, dan ditahbiskan oleh Uskup Agung Joseph Mercieca pada tanggal 17 Februari 1985.[1]

Gereja ini dijadwalkan sebagai gedung Kelas 1 pada tahun 2011.[4]
