Gereja Katolik di Taiwan atau Gereja Katolik di Republik Tiongkok adalah bagian dari Gereja Katolik di seluruh dunia, di bawah kepemimpinan spiritual dari Paus di Roma. Antara 1,5% dan 2% populasi Taiwan beragama Katolik. Gereja Katolik di Taiwan mengoperasikan satu universitas, Universitas Katolik Fu Jen.

Sejarah

Pada tahun 1514, Taiwan termasuk dalam Keuskupan Funchal sebagai yurisdiksi misionaris; ada beberapa kegiatan Katolik terorganisir di pulau itu. Pada tahun 1576, keuskupan Tionghoa pertama, Keuskupan Makau, didirikan di Makau, sebuah koloni Portugis, dan meliputi sebagian besar China termasuk Taiwan. Keuskupan Makau dibagi beberapa kali selama beberapa abad berikutnya. Pada tahun 1626, Taiwan Utara menjadi koloni Spanyol. Pada tahun 1631, Jacinto Esquivel, seorang pastor Spanyol dari Ordo Dominikan, membangun sebuah gereja di Taiwan Utara. Secara kronologis, Taiwan termasuk dalam Keuskupan Agung Manila (1627), Vikariat Apostolik (sekarang Keuskupan Agung) Nanjing (1660), Keuskupan Agung Vikariat Fujian (sekarang Keuskupan Agung Fuzhou) (1696) dan Vikariat Apostolik (sekarang Keuskupan) Xiamen (1883).

Pada tahun 1913, Prefektur Apostolik Pulau Taiwan (dulu disebut Formosa dalam bahasa asing) didirikan dari Keuskupan Xiamen. Namanya diubah menjadi Prefektur Apostolik Kaohsiung (Gaoxiong) pada tahun 1949, ketika Prefektur Apostolik Taipei (sekarang Keuskupan Agung Taipei) didirikan di luar wilayahnya.

Sebelum akhir Perang Dunia II, Gereja Katolik memiliki kehadiran yang sangat kecil di Taiwan, sebagian besar berbasis di selatan pulau dan berpusat pada pendeta Dominikan Spanyol yang pergi ke sana dari Filipina pada tahun 1860-an. Akhir Perang Dunia II dan tahun-tahun berikutnya terjadi migrasi massal komunitas-komunitas agama dari Tiongkok daratan karena penganiayaan Komunis mulai berlaku setelah Revolusi Komunis Tiongkok pada tahun 1949. Akibatnya, Gereja Katolik memiliki banyak Mandarin-berbicara emigran dari daratan.

Pada bulan September 1951, Internuncio Kepausan untuk Tiongkok diusir ke Hong Kong. Sejak 1952, internuncio Kepausan telah ditempatkan di Taiwan (Republik Tiongkok). Juga, duta ROC untuk Takhta Suci telah menyediakan satu-satunya hubungan diplomatik permanen antara Tiongkok dan Tahta Suci. Upaya untuk memindahkan Nuncio Kepausan ke Beijing telah gagal, karena Tahta Suci belum menerima tuntutan Republik Rakyat Tiongkok agar memutuskan hubungan diplomatiknya dengan Taiwan.

Uskup Agung Taipei saat ini adalah Yang Mulia Mgr. Thomas Chung An-Zu (鐘安住), yang dilantik pada 23 Mei 2020[1][2] untuk menggantikan John Hung Shan-chuan (洪山川), S.V.D., yang pensiun pada tahun yang sama.

Pada tanggal 19 Februari 2021, Paus Fransiskus secara resmi memberikan dekrit penobatan kanonik untuk gambar Maria Bunda Maria dari Tiongkok, yang saat ini dihormati di Kuil Nasional Bunda Maria dari Tiongkok di Kabupaten Chiayi, Taiwan.
