Galaksi spiral berbatang

Galaksi spiral berbatang adalah galaksi spiral dengan struktur batang berbentuk sentral yang terdiri dari bintang di pusatnya.^[1] Batang ini dapat ditemukan dari setengah seluruh galaksi spiral.^[2]^[3] Batang umumnya memengaruhi pergerakan bintang dan gas antarbintang dalam galaksi spiral dan juga dapat memengaruhi lengan spiral.^[2] Galaksi bima sakti, di mana tata surya berada, diklasifikasikan sebagai galaksi spiral berbatang.^[4]

Edwin Hubble mengklasifikasikan galaksi spiral jenis ini sebagai "SB" (spiral, barred) dalam klasifikasi Hubble dan menyusunnya ke dalam sub-kategori atau sub-grup berdasarkan seberapa terbuka lengan spiral tersebut. Tipe SBa memiliki lengan yang terikat erat atau rapat, sedangkan tipe SBc memiliki lengan yang terbuka. Galaksi tipe SBb terletak di antara keduanya. SB0 adalah galaksi lentikular berbatang. Jenis baru, SBm, kemudian dibuat untuk menggambarkan spiral berbatang dengan bentuk yang agak tidak teratur seperti Awan Magellan, yang pernah diklasifikasikan sebagai galaksi tidak beraturan, tetapi sejak itu, ditemukan mengandung struktur spiral berbatang. Untuk jenis lain dalam klasifikasi Hubble untuk galaksi-galaksi spiral, galaksi elips dan galaksi tidak beraturan.
