Filsafat abad ke-16 umumnya dianggap sebagai bagian lanjutan dari Filsafat Renaisans.

Filsafat abad ke-16 awal sering disebut Renaisans Puncak dan dianggap menggantikan era Filsafat Renaisans dan mengawali Zaman Rasionalisme. Filsuf terkenal dari zaman ini adalah Desiderius Erasmus, Thomas More, Niccolò Machiavelli, Samuel von Pufendorf, Nicolaus Copernicus, dan Michel de Montaigne.^[1]

Karakteristik filsafat abad ke-16 adalah adanya kombinasi antara tradisi humanis dan skolastik. Terjadi perkembangan penting dalam kosakata, yaitu diperkenalkannya kata ‘psikologi’ (diciptakan oleh Marko Marulic) dan ‘antropologi’ (pertama kali digunakan oleh Magnus Helt). ‘Psikologi’ dalam konteks abad ke-16 merujuk pada diskusi-diskusi mengenai asal-usul jiwa/roh manusia. ‘Antropologi’ digunakan dalam konteks yang lebih sempit daripada yang kita gunakan saat ini, secara kaku merujuk pada hubungan antara jiwa dan anatomi manusia karena keduanya membentuk natur manusia.^[2]

Logika (yang diwakili oleh filsuf, seperti John Mair) mulai tidak disukai di sebagian besar negara Eropa sekitar awal hingga pertengahan abad ke-16 dan pergeseran mengarah pada interpretasi Aristotelia. Karya Erasmus, Antibarbarian, diterbitkan tahun 1520, tiga puluh tahun setelah ditulis oleh Erasmus. Tulisan Erasmus itu membela studi para filsuf dan ilmuwan kuno, yang secara luas disebut sebagai 'pendidikan klasik,' sambil menggiring keyakinan bahwa studi filsafat krusial dalam menjaga agama Kristen.^[2]

Pada periode ini, berkembang skeptisisme akademis, diwakili oleh orang-orang, seperti Omar Talon dan Cornelius Agribba von Nettesheim, yang menulis On the Vanity and Uncertainty of the Arts and Sciences and the Excellence of God’s Word (terjemahan: Di Atas Kesombongan dan Ketidakpastian Seni dan Sains dan Keunggulan Firman Tuhan).^[2]

Secara keseluruhan, tulisan-tulisan Aristoteles adalah subjek paling umum digunakan dari pendapat filosofis besar. Salah satu aspek pemikiran abad ke-16 Aristoteles paling berpengaruh adalah bahwa jiwa dapat dilihat sebagai memiliki dua poros, yaitu sensitif-intelek (emosi dan hasrat) dan kognitif-appetitif (kemauan). Juan Luis Vives, seorang humanis yang dianggap sebagai ‘bapak psikologi modern,’^[2] adalah salah satu dari sedikit filsuf yang mencoba mengeksplorasi model psikologis Aristotelia, dengan menolak pendekatan-pendekatan metafisikal untuk memahami mengenai jiwa dan sebaliknya, menempatkan prioritas pada pemahaman mengenai jiwa melaluui penggambaran fungsi jiwa (meskipun gagal sampai pada alternatif yang dibentuk secara utuh). Argumen-argumennya terpusat pada ketidakmampuan intelektual manusia untuk memahami jiwa itu secara utuh.^[2]
