Filateli

Filateli adalah studi atau penelitian tentang prangko dan sejarah pos. Filateli juga mengacu pada kegiatan koleksi, apresiasi dan penelitian pada prangko serta produk filateli lainnya.^[1] Filateli melibatkan lebih dari sekadar pengumpulan prangko atau studi tentang prangko; seseorang bisa saja menjadi filatelis tanpa mengoleksi prangko.^[2] Misalnya, jika prangko-prangko yang sedang dipelajari mungkin sangat langka atau hanya ada di museum.

Etimologi

Kata "filateli" berasal dari bahasa Inggris philately yang berasal dari bahasa Prancis "philatélie", yang diciptakan oleh filatelis Georges Herpin pada tahun 1864.^[3] Ia menciptakan istilah baru tersebut untuk menggantikan kata timbromanie yang sempat digunakan selama beberapa tahun, namun kurang disukai.^[4] Ia menggabungkan akar kata bahasa Yunani φιλ(ο)- phil(o)-, berarti "suka", dan ἀτέλεια ateleia, berarti "tidak membayar kewajiban dan pajak" membentuk kata "filateli".^[5] Pada zaman itu, penggunaan prangko berarti penerima surat tidak dibebani biaya lagi, karena sudah dibayarkan oleh pengirim; sebelumnya, penerima suratlah yang harus membayar biaya pengiriman surat.

Istilah alternatif "timbromania", "timbrofilia" dan "timbrologi" secara bertahap tidak digunakan lagi setelah istilah filateli diterima secara luas pada tahun 1860-an^[4]
