Federal Aviation Administration (disingkat FAA bahasa Indonesia: Badan Penerbangan Federal Amerika Serikat) merupakan lembaga regulator penerbangan sipil di Amerika Serikat. Sebagai bagian dari Kementerian Transportasi Amerika Serikat, badan ini bertanggungjawab sebagai pengatur dan pengawas penerbangan sipil di Amerika Serikat (fungsinya mirip dengan Direktorat Jenderal Perhubungan Udara di Indonesia). Undang-Undang Penerbangan Federal 1958 menjadi dasar hukum berdirinya lembaga ini dengan nama "Lembaga Penerbangan Federal" (Federal Aviation Agency), dan menggunakan namanya yang sekarang pada tahun 1966 ketika FAA bernaung di bawah Jawatan Pengangkutan (Kementerian Transportasi AS).

Fungsi utama

FAA berfungsi untuk:

  • Mengatur transportasi udara komersial di Amerika Serikat.
  • Mengatur geometri dari navigasi udara dan standar inspeksi penerbangan
  • Mendorong dan mengembangkan aeronautik sipil, termasuk inovasi baru di bidang aviasi
  • Mengeluarkan, menangguhkan, atau mencabut sertifikat pilot
  • Mengatur penerbangan sipil untuk meningkatkan keselamatan, terutama melalui kantor lokal yang disebut Flight Standards District Office
  • Mengembangkan dan mengoperasikan sistem pemanduan lalu lintas udara, untuk penerbangan sipil maupun militer
  • Melakukan riset dan mengembangkan National Airspace System
  • Mengembangkan dan mengeluarkan program untuk mengatur polusi suara dan masalah lingkungan lain yang timbul akibat aktivitas aviasi
