Ethel Kennedy (née Skakel /ˈskeɪ.kəl/ SKAY-kel; 11 April 1928 – 10 Oktober 2024) adalah seorang pembela hak asasi manusia Amerika Serikat. Dia adalah janda almarhum Robert F. Kennedy, saudara ipar Presiden John F. Kennedy, dan anak keenam dari George dan Ann Skakel (née Brannack). Tak lama setelah pembunuhan suaminya pada tahun 1968, ia mendirikan Pusat Keadilan dan Hak Asasi Manusia Robert F. Kennedy, sebuah badan amal nirlaba yang bekerja untuk mencapai tujuannya yaitu dunia yang adil dan damai. Pada tahun 2014, ia dianugerahi Presidential Medal of Freedom oleh Presiden Barack Obama.

Kennedy meninggal pada 10 Oktober 2024, pada usia 96 tahun, akibat komplikasi stroke yang dideritanya seminggu sebelumnya.[1]

Kehidupan awal

Ethel Skakel lahir di Chicago, Illinois, dari pasangan pengusaha George Skakel dan mantan sekretarisnya Ann Brannack.[2] George adalah pendiri Great Lakes Carbon Corporation, yang sekarang merupakan divisi dari SGL Carbon.[3] Orangtuanya tewas dalam kecelakaan pesawat tahun 1955.[4] Dia adalah anak ketiga dari empat putri Skakel dan anak keenam dari tujuh bersaudara.[5] George adalah seorang Protestan keturunan Belanda,[6][7][8] sedangkan Ann adalah seorang Katolik keturunan Irlandia.

Ethel dan saudara-saudaranya dibesarkan di Greenwich, Connecticut. Ethel bersekolah di Akademi Greenwich khusus perempuan, dan lulus dari Biara Hati Kudus di Bronx pada tahun 1945.[9] Pada bulan September 1945, Ethel memulai pendidikan perguruan tinggi di Manhattanville College, di mana dia menjadi teman sekelas calon ipar perempuannya, Jean Kennedy.[10] Dia menerima gelar sarjana dari Manhattanville pada tahun 1949.[11]

Ethel pertama kali bertemu saudara laki-laki Jean, Robert F. Kennedy selama perjalanan ski ke Resor Mont Tremblant di Quebec pada bulan Desember 1945. Selama perjalanan itu, Robert mulai berkencan dengan kakak perempuan Ethel, Patricia, tetapi setelah hubungan itu berakhir, dia mulai berkencan dengan Ethel. Dia berkampanye untuk kakak laki-laki Robert, John F. Kennedy dalam kampanye John tahun 1946 untuk Kongres di distrik kongres ke-11 Massachusetts, dan dia menulis tesis perguruan tinggi di bukunya Why England Slept.[9]
