Formula umum ester karboksilat

Ester adalah suatu senyawa organik yang terbentuk melalui penggantian satu (atau lebih) atom hidrogen pada gugus karboksil dengan suatu gugus organik (biasa dilambangkan dengan R').[1] Asam oksigen adalah suatu asam yang molekulnya memiliki gugus -OH yang hidrogennya (H) dapat menjadi ion H+.

Tata nama ester

Penamaan pada senyawa ester terdiri dari dua kata. Kata pertama merupakan nama gugus alkil yang terikat pada oksigen ester. Adapun kata kedua berasa dari nama asam karboksilatnya dengan menghilangkan kata "asam"[1]

Senyawa-senyawa ester

Banyak ester memiliki bau seperti bau buah-buahan, sehingga banyak senyawanya dijadikan perasa dan aroma buatan.[1]

Pembentukan ester

Reaksi pembentukan ester disebut juga sebagai esterifikasi. Senyawa ini terbentuk melalui pengubahan satu atau lebih atom hidrogen pada gugus hidroksil dengan suatu gugus organik[1]

Pemanfaatan

Ester dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan pengharum, bahan pembuatan sabun, margarin, benang, lilin, obat penghilang rasa sakit, pembuatan cat kuku, dan lem[2]
