Erabu adalah kelompok ular laut yang berwarna belang-belang yang mirip seperti welang. Ular ini juga disebut katang laut, dalam bahasa Inggris disebut Sea krait. Ular-ular ini hidup di perairan teritorial dekat pantai di seluruh perairan laut Indo-Australia dan bahkan agihannya mencapai Selandia Baru dan kemungkinan juga sampai ke Kepulauan Hawaii.[1] Di Indonesia, ular ini adalah ular laut yang sangat umum ditemui dan biasanya hidup di terumbu karang atau di dekat pantai. Terdapat sekitar 8 spesies.[2][3][4]

Kebiasaan

Ular-ular ini mungkin aktif pada malam hari. Erabu adalah satu-satunya kelompok ular laut yang bertelur. Mereka biasanya menuju pesisir pantai yang jauh dari manusia, naik ke darat, lalu mencari tempat untuk meletakkan telur-telurnya. Setelah bertelur, mereka kembali ke laut, dan membiarkan telur-telurnya menetas sendiri; sama seperti yang dilakukan oleh penyu.[5] Makanan ular-ular ini adalah ikan dan mungkin juga krustasea. Semua jenis erabu berbisa sangat kuat.[6][7]

Populasi di perairan Nusantara

Di Indonesia, jenis yang paling sering ditemui adalah Erabu kuning (Laticauda colubrina) dan Erabu biru (Laticauda laticaudata). Kedua jenis ini biasanya ditemukan di antara terumbu karang. Populasi terbanyak diketahui di sepanjang pantai barat Sumatra, Selat Malaka, perairan Kepulauan Riau, Laut Jawa, Selat Madura, seluruh perairan Bali dan Nusa Tenggara, Teluk Tomini, Bunaken, dan perairan Maluku.[8] [9][10]
