Era Jazz

Era Jazz merupakan suatu masa yang dihubungkan dengan periode liberal dalam budaya Barat, yang dicirikan oleh perpaduan antara modernitas dan tradisi, kehidupan sosial yang penuh gemerlap, serta impian-impian yang riuh di kota-kota besar. Tema-tema ini mencuat dalam karya-karya terkenal Fitzgerald, seperti This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, dan Tender Is the Night[1]. Periode ini juga disebut dengan Roaring Twenties atau Roaring 20's yang merupakan era kemakmuran ekonomi dengan ciri budaya yang khas di Amerika Serikat dan Eropa, terutama di kota-kota besar seperti Berlin[2], Buenos Aires[3][4], Chicago, London[5], Los Angeles[6], Kota Meksiko[7], Kota New York[8], Paris[9], dan Sydney[10]. Di Prancis, dekade itu dikenal sebagai années folles ("tahun-tahun gila")[11], menekankan dinamika sosial, artistik, dan budaya era tersebut. Jazz berkembang pesat, flapper mendefinisikan ulang penampilan modern bagi wanita Inggris dan Amerika[12], dan Art Deco mencapai puncaknya[13].

Perkembangan sosial budaya di pusat-pusat metropolitan utama berkembang pesat dan menyebar luas setelah Perang Dunia I. Semangat dari era ini ditandai oleh perasaan umum akan kesegaran yang terkait dengan modernitas dan pemutusan dengan tradisi, melalui teknologi modern seperti mobil, film, dan radio, membawa modernitas kepada sebagian besar populasi. Hiasan formal dikurangi demi praktikalitas dalam kehidupan sehari-hari dan arsitektur. Pada saat yang sama, jazz dan tarian meningkat popularitasnya, sebagai lawan dari suasana Perang Dunia I. Karena itu, periode ini sering disebut sebagai Era Jazz. Istilah tersebut sudah populer sebelum tahun 1920. Pada tahun 1922, penulis Amerika F. Scott Fitzgerald lebih mempopulerkan istilah tersebut dengan menerbitkan kumpulan cerita pendeknya yang berjudul Tales of the Jazz Age.
