Efek Manik Baily

Efek Manik Baily adalah satu ciri dari gerhana matahari total. Ketika Bulan lewat di depan Matahari selama gerhana matahari total, topografi permukaan Bulan yang kasar memungkinkan "manik-manik" sinar matahari melewati di beberapa tempat, dan tidak di tempat lain. Fenomena ini dinamai oleh Francis Baily, orang pertama yang memberikan deskripsi akurat tentang fenomena ini pada tahun 1836.[1][2] Efek dari cincin permata dapat dilihat ketika hanya satu dari "manik-manik" ini yang tersisa; permata bersinar yang terletak di cincin terang di sekitar bayangan Bulan.[3]

Bulan memiliki medan yang beragam karena adanya banyak gunung, kawah, lembah dan ciri-ciri topografi lain. Ketidakrataan sisi Bulan ("sisi" Bulan yang dilihat dari kejauhan) diketahui secara tepat dari pengamatan okultasi antarbintang. Oleh karena itu, para astronom sangat memahami gunung dan lembah Bulan mana yang akan menyebabkan munculnya manik-manik ini sebelum gerhana. Manik-manik Baily hanya muncul beberapa detik di tengah jalur ekliptika, namun durasinya paling lama berada tepi jalur umbra, yaitu sekitar 1-2 menit.

Manik-manik Baily dan efek cincin permata tidak aman untuk dilihat secara langsung tanpa memakai pelindung mata yang sesuai karena dalam kedua kejadian tersebut, fotosfer Matahari masih terlihat.
