Edward Stillingfleet

Edward Stillingfleet (1635-1699) adalah seorang teolog Gereja Anglikan yang terkenal karena polemik-polemik yang ia lakukan.[1] Ia pertama kali berdebat melawan sektarianisme religius di Inggris dengan menggunakan doktrin-doktrin hukum kodrat.[1] Stillingfleet juga pernah melakukan polemik dengan John Locke.[1]

Riwayat

Ia dilahirkan di Cranborne, Dorset. Pada usia 13 tahun ia bersekolah di St John's College, Cambridge, dan lulus dengan gelar B.A. pad tahun 1652.[2] Ia menjadi vicar Sutton, Bedfordshire pada tahun 1657.[3]

Karya

Seorang kontroversialis yang teliti, ia menulis banyak risalah, dengan topik umum tetapi terarah untuk membela ortodoksi Anglikan.

Doktrin dan Gereja

Kitab pertamanya The Irenicum, (1659) mendukung kompromi dengan Presbyterianisme; mengikuti suatu pendekatan Latitudinarian, ia menunjukkan di sana pengaruh John Selden dan memberi perhatian cermat pada sinagoge sebagai model struktur gereja.[4]
