Dokumen Hallowen

Dokumen Halloween adalah serangkaian memo rahasia yang dibuat oleh Microsoft yang membahas strategi potensial terkait dengan perangkat lunak sumber terbuka, khususnya Linux, dan bagaimana tanggapan media terhadapnya. Eric S. Raymond, pendukung perangkat lunak sumber terbuka, membocorkan dan merespons dokumen-dokumen ini pada tahun 1998.[1] Dokumen-dokumen ini sering dikaitkan dengan Halloween karena sebagian besar dari mereka bocor atau dipublikasikan sekitar tanggal 31 Oktober setiap tahunnya.

Memo Halloween pertama, yang dibuat oleh Vinod Valloppillil, manajer proyek di Microsoft, dan diminta oleh Jim Allchin, Wakil Presiden Senior di Microsoft, untuk diperhatikan oleh Paul Maritz, Wakil Presiden Senior, bocor ke Eric Raymond pada bulan Oktober 1998. Raymond kemudian segera mempublikasikan versi yang diberi komentar di situs webnya. Dokumen ini merujuk pada memo kedua yang terkait khusus dengan Linux, dan dokumen ini, yang ditulis oleh Vinod Valloppillil dan Josh Cohen dari Microsoft, juga diterima, dikomentari, dan dipublikasikan oleh Raymond. Microsoft kemudian mengakui keaslian dokumen-dokumen ini.[2] Dokumen-dokumen ini diberi label "Rahasia Microsoft", mengidentifikasi perangkat lunak sumber terbuka, terutama sistem operasi Linux, sebagai ancaman besar bagi dominasi Microsoft dalam industri perangkat lunak,[3] dan mengusulkan strategi yang dapat digunakan oleh Microsoft untuk menghambat perkembangan perangkat lunak sumber terbuka.

Dokumen-dokumen ini mengakui bahwa produk perangkat lunak gratis seperti Linux bersaing secara teknologi dengan beberapa produk Microsoft,[4] dan mengembangkan strategi untuk menghadapinya. Pandangan ini bertentangan dengan pernyataan publik Microsoft tentang masalah ini.

Sejak publikasi kedua dokumen asli ini, memo Microsoft lainnya tentang topik terkait juga bocor dan dipublikasikan.
