Dimulai pada tahun 1950-an sebagai hasil akhir dari pendudukan atas Hindia Belanda, pemerintah Belanda memutuskan untuk membawa sekitar 12.500 tentara Tentara Kerajaan Hindia Belanda (KNIL) berdarah Maluku dan keluarga mereka ke Eropa. Mereka dilepaskan dari ketentaraan pada saat kedatangan dan dimukimkan di kamp-kamp[1] untuk "sementara" sampai mereka mungkin kembali ke Maluku.[2]
Walaupun Republik Maluku Selatan (RMS) telah dideklarasikan pada tanggal 25 April 1950,[3] gerakan ini dikalahkan oleh pemerintah Indonesia dan pengikut sisa RMS meninggalkan tanah air mereka dan membentuk pemerintahan dalam pengasingan di Belanda pada tahun 1966.[4]
