Devil's Gap Battery (meriam utara)

Devil's Gap Battery adalah sebuah baterai pantai di Teritori Seberang Laut Britania Gibraltar yang menghadap Teluk Gibraltar dekat pinggiran paling barat Upper Rock Nature Reserve.

Sejarah

Disebut Punta del Diablo bahasa Inggris: Devil's Point oleh Spanyol, Devil's Gap Battery berdiri di sebuah pahatan di atas kota yang menghadap teluk pada ketinggian 130 meter (430 ft) di atas permukaan laut. Selama Pengepungan Besar Gibraltar 1779-1783, meriam ini menembakkan sedikitnya satu mortir, kemungkinan lebih. Pada tahun 1878, meriam RML 9 inci 12 ton dipasang di baterai ini pada bulan Juni 1881, namun dicabut tahun 1900. Bulan Juli 1896, pembangunan platform baru di sebelah utara baterai untuk dua meriam laut Mark I QF 12 pounder 12 cwt dimulai dan rampung pada tanggal 31 Agustus 1896.[1]

Bulan Juni 1900, diusulkan agar dua meriam laut Mk VII BL 6 inci dipasang di titik tengah meriam Mark II dengan jangkauan 5,500 meter (6,015 yd) menghadap baterai darat dan teluk. Meriam ini dipasang tahun 1902 dan ditambah magasin dan pelindung pada bulan Oktober 1903.[1]

Salah satu meriam berhasil menenggelamkan kapal selam Jerman yang mendekati Algeciras pada Agustus 1917.[1]

Meriam ini diawaki pada tahun 1936 saat Perang Saudara Spanyol ketika Campamento dan La Línea de la Concepción dibom oleh angkatan laut Spanyol.[1]

Sepanjang Perang Dunia II, meriam ini termasuk di antara yang pertama menembakkan proyektil tepat sasaran.[1]

Pada tahun 1954, baterai ini berhenti beroperasi, tetapi meriam 6 incinya masih dipertahankan dan tetap dalam posisinya.[1]

Fasilitas bawah tanah

Sebuah kompleks bawah tanah kecil di bawah meriam berisikan rak penyimpanan, magasin, dan derek granat.

Wilayah pertama setelah pintu masuk berisi dua derek granat untuk meriam selatan. Keduanya masih dalam kondisi baik sesuai usianya, meski semua bagian penggeraknya sudah berkarat. Terdapat pula palka untuk memindahkan amunisi dari magasin.

Sebuah koridor membentang melintasi kompleks ini. Selain itu, terdapat dua derek granat lagi untuk meriam utara yang keadaannya juga mulai berkarat. Koridor utama membentang melintasi pintu dan menuju bawah bukit hingga ruangan-ruangan tempat penyimpanan baterai yang lebih tua lagi.[1]

Perawatan

Baterai ini dirawat oleh sekelompok relawan atas nama Gibraltar Heritage Trust.[2]
