Demofon

Dalam mitologi Yunani, Demofon atau Demofoon (bahasa Yunani: Δημοφῶν atau Δημοφόων) adalah putra Raja Keleus dan Ratu Metaneira di Eleusis.

Ketika Demeter sedang mencari putrinya, Persefone, yang diculik oleh Hades, Demeter menyamar menjadi seorang perempuan tua bernama Doso.Dalam pencariannya, Demeter menerima perlakuan yang baik dari Keleus, Raja Eleusis di Attika. Keleus lalu meminta Demeter untuk merawat bayinya yang bernama Demofon. Sebagai balasan atas kebaikan Keleus, Demeter berencana menjadikan Demofon sebagai dewa dengan cara membakar spirit manusianya di perapian keluarga setiap malam. Namun dia tidak sempat menyelesaikan ritualnya karena Metanira melihat Demeter menaruh bayinya di atas api. Metaneira menjerit dan Demeter pun marah. Beberapa mengatakan bahwa Demofon terbakar oleh api, tetapi dalam sumber-sumber lainnya dia tidak apa-apa.

Sebagai gantinya Demeter mengajari Triptolemos, kakak Demofon, ilmu pertanian, dan Triptolemos kemudian berkelana ke seluruh Yunani untuk mengajari bangsa Yunani bercocok tanam. Dia melakukannya dengan mengendarai kereta perang bersayap sambil ditemani oleh Demeter dan Persefone.[1][2][3]

Dalam Himne Homeros untuk Demeter, disebutkan mengenai ritual pertarungan di Eleusis, yaitu acara atletik yang disebut Ballêtos,[4] yang digelar secara musiman untuk mengenang kematian Demofon, sang bayi pahlawan. Acara tersebut kemungkinan merupakan acara inti dari Pesta Olahraga Eleusis.[5]
