Daniel Owen James adalah pemain sepak bola profesional Wales kelahiran Inggris yang bermain di posisi gelandang sayap. Saat ini Daniel James bermain untuk klub Liga Premier Inggris Leeds United dan tim nasional Wales.
Pada Februari 2018, James mengawali debut profesionalnya di Swansea City. Ia kemudian pindah ke Manchester United pada Juni 2019. Pada November 2018, ia memulai debut seniornya di timnas Wales, setelah sebelumnya berkali-kali bertanding di level U-21. Daniel James masuk ke skuad Wales di perhelatan UEFA Euro 2020.
Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire merupakan tanah kelahiran James.[4] Ia lahir dari kedua orangtua yang bernama Elaine dan Kevan James.[5] Tumbuh dan besar di desa South Cave,[5] ia pun melanjutkan sekolah di South Hunsley School di Melton.[4]
James awalnya digadang-gadang menjadi pemain bintang oleh akademi Hull City. Ia kemudian bergabung ke Swansea City pada tahun 2014 dengan biaya awal sebesar £72.000.[6] Pada musim 2016–17, James masuk ke tim Swansea U23 yang kemudian mendapatkan promosi ke Divisi 1 PDL. Liga itu dimenangkan dengan jarak 11 poin dari posisi dua klasemen. James dipinjamkan ke League One Shrewsbury Town hingga akhir musim pada tanggal 30 Juni 2017.[7] Peminjaman tersebut berakhir pada tanggal 31 Agustus 2017, karena ia gagal masuk ke tim utama.[8]
Pada tanggal 6 Februari 2018, ia melakukan debut di tim utama Swansea sebagai pemain pengganti dan mencetak gol pada menit ke-82 pada laga kemenangan 8-1 Piala FA atas Notts County .[9]
James ingin pindah dari pindah dari klub dan bergabung dengan Leeds United pada akhir Januari 2019, penawaran £10 juta telah disepakati oleh kedua klub. James telah menyetujui persyaratan dan telah menyelesaikan pemeriksaan medik di Leeds.[10] Ia berada di Elland Road untuk wawancara dan pemotretan sebelum kesepakatan diselesaikan.[11] Namun, terdapat perselisihan pada tim internal Swansea pada satu jam sebelum bursa transfer ditutup. Kontrak tersebut berlangsung selama lima tahun, dengan satu tahun opsi perpanjangan kontrak.[14]
Gol pertamanya untuk Manchester United berhasil dicetaknya pada debut kompetitifnya. Ia masuk sebagai pemain pengganti dalam kemenangan 4-0 atas Chelsea itu.[15] Dia juga mencetak gol ketika United kalah 2-1 melawan Crystal Palace .[16] Gol ketiganya untuk klub dicetaknya pada pertandingan keempatnya, saat imbang 1-1 dengan Southampton,[17] gol tersebut kemudian terpilih menjadi gol terbaik bulan ini oleh penggemar United.[18] James terpilih sebagai pemain terbaik United bulan Agustus 2019.[19] Puasa gol selama tujuh bulan diakhiri James dengan mencetak gol pada laga dengan kemenangan 5-0 atas LASK, pada Maret 2020, laga terakhir sebelum penangguhan sepak bola akibat pandemi COVID-19 .[20] Meskipun jarang mencetak gol, James merupakan pemain dengan assist terbanyak di klub pada saat sebelum suspensi.
James mencetak gol pada kompetisi liga pertamanya pada musim itu dalam laga kemenangan 6-2 melawan Leeds United pada tanggal 20 Desember 2020.[21] Ia kemudian mencetak gol dalam kemenangan terbesar yang menyamai rekor Liga Premier 9-0 melawan Southampton pada tanggal 2 Februari 2021.[22]
James pindah ke Leeds United pada tanggal 31 Agustus 2021 dengan biaya yang tidak disebutkan dalam kontrak lima tahun. Menurut beberapa sumber, dilaporkan biaya transfernya mencapai £25 juta.[23][24]
James memenuhi persyaratan untuk membela timnas Wales melalui mendiang ayahnya, yang lahir di Aberdare,[25] walaupun ia sendiri lahir di Inggris.[26] James pertama kali mencetak gol melalui tendangan penalti di Turnamen Toulon untuk timnas Wales U20 dalam kemenangan 1-0 atas timnas Bahrain U20.[27]
James dipanggil bermain di timnas senior pertamanya pada pertandingan kualifikasi Piala Dunia FIFA 2018 melawan timnas Serbia pada tahun 2017 di bawah manajer Chris Coleman.[26] Debut penuhnya dilakukan di bawah Ryan Giggs dalam pertandingan melawan timnas Albania pada November 2018. Ia bermain selama 58 menit pada pertandingan itu.[28] Gol pertama di timnas senior Wales dicetak James pada pertandingan keduanya. Pada pertandingan melawan Slovakia dalam debut kompetitifnya di kandang itu, satu-satunya gol berhasil dijaringkannya di menit awal kick-off.[29] Gol kemenangan satu-satunya dicetak James dalam pertandingan persahabatan melawan Belarusia pada jeda internasional di bulan September 2019.[30] Pada Mei 2021 ia masuk ke skuad Wales untuk turnamen UEFA Euro 2020 yang tertunda akibat COVID-19.
