Peta persebaran bahasa-bahasa di Sulawesi

Berikut ini merupakan daftar bahasa di Sulawesi menurut rumpun bahasa. Bahasa-bahasa di Sulawesi terbagi dalam 5 rumpun bahasa, yaitu: Celebic, Filipina, Melayik, Sama-Bajau, dan Sulawesi Selatan. Menurut Sulawesi Language AllianceSulawesi Statistics, dari 114 bahasa yang dipertuturkan di Sulawesi,

  • 4 bahasa memiliki lebih dari 1 juta penutur Bugis, Makasar, Melayu Manado, dan Gorontalo;
  • 20 bahasa memiliki 100.000 hingga 1 juta penutur, artinya 90 bahasa memiliki kurang dari 100.000 penutur;
  • 50 bahasa memiliki kurang dari 10.000 penutur; dan
  • 23 bahasa memiliki kurang dari 100.000 penutur;

Dari bahasa-bahasa tersebut, 40 di antaran digolongkan 'Aman' dari segi jumlah penutur; 37 bahasa 'Rawan' dan 31 bahasa 'Terancam', sementara sisanya belum diketahui statusnya karena kurangnya informasi. Sulawesi adalah pulau dengan jumlah bahasa terbanyak ketiga di dunia, setelah Pulau Papua dan Pulau Kalimantan.

Rumpun bahasa Filipina terdiri dari seluruh bahasa di Filipina, bahasa di Sulawesi bagian utara (tidak termasuk bahasa Melayu Manado), dan sebagian bahasa di Palawan. Meski bahasa Sama-Bajau juga terdapat di wilayah tersebut, bahasa itu tidak termasuk dalam rumpun ini, tetapi dalam rumpun terpisah. Rumpun bahasa Melayik

Rumpun bahasa Melayik merupakan rumpun bahasa terbesar di Nusantara. Sebagian besar bahasa di Malaysia semenanjung, Sumatra, dan Kalimantan termasuk dalam rumpun ini. Banyak bahasa pasar di Nusantara juga termasuk dalam rumpun ini, karena berakar dari bahasa Melayu yang telah bercampur dengan bahasa setempat, seperti bahasa-bahasa pada tabel di bawah.
