Cygnus adalah wahana antariksa kargo yang dikembangkan oleh Orbital Sciences Corporation dan sekarang diproduksi dan diluncurkan oleh Northrop Grumman Space Systems sebagai bagian dari Program Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) NASA. Wahana ini diluncurkan menggunakan roket Antares atau Atlas V dan dirancang untuk mengangkut pasokan ke Stasiun Luar Angkasa Internasional (ISS) setelah Pesawat Ulang Alik berhenti beroperasi. Sejak Agustus 2000, misi resuplai ISS dilakukan oleh wahana Progress Rusia, Automated Transfer Vehicle Eropa, dan H-II Transfer Vehicle Jepang. Dengan wahana antariksa Cygnus dan SpaceX Dragon, NASA berusaha untuk meningkatkan kemitraan dengan industri penerbangan dan aeronautika komersial domestik.[1]

Cygnus adalah kata Yunani Latin untuk angsa dan konstelasi utara.

Pengembangan

Setelah Rocketplane Kistler tidak dapat memenuhi pendanaan kendaraan peluncur K-1 dibawah kesepakatan COTS, NASA memutuskan pada 18 Oktober 2007 untuk menghentikan kontrak dengan Rocketplane Kistler dan mengadakan kompetisi untuk kontrak COTS.[2] Pada 19 Februari 2008, NASA mengumumkan Orbital Sciences sebagai pemenang kontrak.[3] Pada 23 Desember 2008, NASA memberi Orbital Sciences kontrak senilai 1,9 milyar dolar AS dibawah program Commercial Resupply Services (CRS). Dibawah kontrak ini, Orbital Sciences menyetujui untuk untuk mengangkut 20 ton kargo ke ISS pada 2016 menggunakan delapan penerbangan wahana antariksa Cygnus.[1]
