Konteks

Dalam film ini, lagu ini pertama kali dinyanyikan sendirian oleh Sebastian (Gosling) sambil menari di Hermosa Beach Pier. Lagu ini kemudian dinyanyikan kembali oleh Sebastian dan Mia (Stone) sebelum menjalani tur bersama band Keith (John Legend).

Inspirasi

Justin Hurwitz, penggubah lagu ini, menjelaskan proses penulisan lagunya:[5]

[Lagu ini] berawal dari beberapa demo piano yang aku buat untuk Damien. Semua gagasanku kukirim ke Damien sampai ada yang cocok. Lucu juga melihat bahwa "City of Stars" dan "Audition" adalah dua lagu yang mendapat respon paling banyak sejauh ini dari penonton karena mereka memiliki pengalaman serupa, artinya mereka mungkin tidak terlalu banyak berpikir ketika musik piano sedang dimainkan. [...] Aku mengarangnya dalam posisi emosional dan memikirkan nadanya. Kurasa nadanya penuh harapan sekaligus melankolis. Iramanya naik turun antara mayor dan minor karena sesuai dengan makna yang hendak disampaikan lagu ini. Anda mengalami masa-masa bahagia dan sedih di Los Angeles dan film ini memperlihatkan semuanya. Aku sempat membayangkan ceritanya dan mencoba mengarang melodi yang dapat dinikmati dan indah. Kurasa lagu ini punya sedikit sentuhan jazz karena itulah yang disuarakan Sebastian saat bermain piano.
