Carel van Schaik

Carolus Philippus "Carel" van Schaik (lahir 15 Juni 1953, Rotterdam)[1] adalah ahli primata Belanda yang sejak 2004 menjadi profesor dan direktur Institut dan Museum Antropologi di Universitas Zürich, Swiss.

Van Schaik belajar biologi di Universitas Utrecht, lulus pada tahun 1979. Dia merupakan seorang peneliti untuk Yayasan Belanda untuk Kemajuan Riset Tropis hingga tahun 1984 dan menyelesaikan disertasi doktoralnya untuk Universitas Utrecht pada tahun 1985. Setelah jabatan di universitas ini dan di Universitas Princeton, ia menjadi Profesor Madya di Departemen Antropologi Biologi dan Anatomi di Universitas Duke di Durham pada tahun 1989. Pada tahun 2004 ia pindah ke Universitas Zurich. Pada tahun 2007 Van Schaik menjadi koresponden Akademi Seni dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Kerajaan Belanda.[2]

Ketertarikan pada kera muncul menjelang tahun tujuh puluhan, saat melakukan ekspedisi ke Sumatera bersama istrinya. Segera setelah itu, van Schaik menjadi lebih tertarik pada monyet daripada pada tanaman, dan ketika di bagian barat laut Sumatra ia tiba di daerah berawa di Suaq, ia akhirnya bertemu dengan orang utan.
