Braj atau Vraja, juga dikenal sebagai Vraj, Brij atau Braj Bhoomi, adalah sebuah wilayah di India tepatnya di kedua sisi sungai Yamuna dengan pusatnya di Mathura-Vrindavan di negara bagian Uttar Pradesh yang meliputi daerah yang juga meliputi daerah Palwal, Ballabhgarh dan Nuh di negara bagian Haryana, Deeg, Bharatpur, Karauli, dan Dholpur di negara bagian Rajasthan dan Distrik Morena di Madhya Pradesh.^[1]. Daerah Braj membentang dari distrik Mathura , Aligarh , Agra , Hathras dan hingga distrik Farrukhabad, Mainpuri dan Etah. Wilayah Braj dikaitkan dengan Radha dan Krishna yang menurut kitab suci masing-masing lahir di Barsana dan Mathura. Wilayah Braj ini adalah pusat utama dari rangkaian ziarah dewa Hindu Krishna.^[2]^[3]^[4]^[1]

Secara ekologis, wilayah Braj telah berubah drastis dalam 200 tahun terakhir, dengan penurunan tajam jumlah hewan liar bersamaan dengan penggundulan hutan. Dalam tulisannya pada akhir tahun 1980-an, Entwistle mencatat bahwa hanya ada beberapa rumpun pohon yang tersisa di wilayah tersebut, dan banyak situs suci yang diambil oleh pemukiman pertanian manusia.^[5]

Etimologi

Istilah Braj berasal dari kata Sansekerta व्रज Vraja, Vraja pertama kali disebutkan dalam Rigveda , dan dalam bahasa Sansekerta memilili arti padang rumput, tempat berlindung atau wilayah untuk berternak.^[4]^[6]

Rangkaian ziarah

Rangkaian ziarah Braj Yatra secara resmi didirikan oleh para sadhu dari sampradaya vaishnava pada abad ke-16 dengan rute, rencana perjalanan, dan ritual yang tetap. Wilayah yang dicakup sirkuit ini tersebar di 2500 km 2 dengan 84 kos atau pinggiran sepanjang 300 km yang membentang 10 km ke timur dan 50 km ke utara dan barat. Braj memiliki dua jenis sirkuit ziarah utama, Braj Yatra tradisional yang lebih panjang yang mencakup seluruh sirkuit, dan ziarah titik-ke-titik kontemporer yang dimodifikasi secara signifikan lainnya untuk mengunjungi situs-situs utama di Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul , Govardhan .
