Bloemfontein (bahasa Belanda untuk "air mancur bunga-bunga") adalah salah satu dari tiga ibu kota Afrika Selatan, bersama dengan Pretoria dan Kotа Tanjung. Bloemfontein adalah ibu kota yudikatif, serta merupakan ibu kota provinsi Daerah Bebas. Nama kota ini dalam bahasa Sesotho adalah Mangaung, yang berarti "tempat di mana para cheetah tinggal".

Kota ini terletak di padang rumput kering di koordinat 29°S 26°E / 29°S 26°E / -29; 26, pada ketinggian 1.395 meter di atas permukaan laut. Penduduk wilayah kota berjumlah 369.568 jiwa, sementara wilayah kotamadya Mangaung Raya mempunyai penduduk berjumlah 645.455 jiwa. Bloemfontein mempunyai sebuah bandar udara, Bandar Udara Bloemfontein.

Sejarah

Secara sejarah Bloemfontein adalah sebuah pemukiman Afrikaner. Kota ini didirikan pada 1846, dan merupakan ibu kota Orange Free State antara tahun 1854-1902.

Sebuah jalur kereta api dibangun pada tahun 1890 yang menghubungkannya dengan Cape Town. Kemudian pada tahun 1899, Bloemfontein menjadi tempat berlangsungnya Konferensi Bloemfontein, yang gagal menghindarkan terjadinya Perang Boer.

Pengarang Inggris yang terkenal, J. R. R. Tolkien, lahir di kota ini pada 3 Januari 1892.

Pada 13 Maret 1900 saat berlangsungnya Perang Boer, pasukan Britania merebut kota ini dan membangun kamp konsentrasi di sini untuk menampung wanita-wanita dan anak-anak Boer. Ke-28.000 wanita dan anak-anak yang meninggal di kamp ini dikenang dengan dibangunnya Tugu Peringatan Wanita Nasional (National Women's Memorial) yang terletak di pinggiran kota.
