Bissau adalah ibu kota sekaligus kota terbesar Guinea-Bissau. Penduduknya berjumlah 492.004 jiwa (2015).

Kota ini didirikan pada 1687 oleh Portugal sebagai pelabuhan berbenteng dan pusat perdagangan.[1] Pada tahun 1942 ibu kota Guinea Portugis dipindahkan dari Bolama ke Bissau.

Setelah deklarasi kemerdekaan oleh gerilyawan anti-kolonial PAIGC pada tahun 1973, ibu kota wilayah pemberontak dinyatakan sebagai Madina do Boe, sementara Bissau tetap menjadi ibu kota kolonial. Ketika Portugal memberikan kemerdekaan, setelah kudeta militer 25 April di Lisbon, Bissau menjadi ibu kota negara merdeka yang baru.
