Benteng (♖ ♜, terjemah dari bahasa Belanda, toren, "gerbang", "benteng") adalah buah catur yang bergerak secara horizontal ataupun vertikal, dan dapat berpartisipasi dalam gerakan istimewa, yaitu rokade. Masing-masing pecatur memiliki dua benteng yang terletak di ujung papan catur.

Benteng dilambangkan dalam notasi catur, yaitu B.[1]

Letak dan pergerakan

Benteng putih berawal di a1 dan h1, sedangkan benteng hitam dimulai di a8 dan h8. Benteng bergerak secara horizontal ataupun vertikal, tetapi buah catur ini tidak dapat melewati buah catur kawannya dengan melompat. Cara memakannya adalah dengan mengerakkan ke arah buah catur lawannya yang terletak di suatu petak. Selain itu, benteng dapat berpartisipasi dengan raja dalam sebuah gerakan yang istimewa, yang dinamakan rokade; pada langkah ini, raja dipindahkan ke suatu petak yang dilalui raja setelah raja pindah dua petak ke arah benteng.

Babak akhir

Pada babak akhir permainan, benteng merupakan buah catur yang paling terkuat saat bidak-bidak tidak menghalanginya dan dapat bergerak serta mengendalikan sejumlah petak di papan catur. Akan tetapi, benteng dapat dikatakan agak ceroboh saat bidak lawan hendak maju mencapai promosi; kecuali apabila benteng dapat menguasai lajur di belakang bidak yang hendak maju. Selain itu, benteng dapat mendukung bidak kawannya yang hendak mencapai promosi dengan meletakkannya di belakang bidak pada lajur yang sama (lihat aturan Tarrasch).

Benteng sangat mahir dalam melakukan sekakmat kepada raja lawan. Contoh-contoh berikut merupakan gerakan benteng yang mendorong raja lawan hingga sekakmat.
