Benjamin Berell Ferencz (11 Maret 1920 – 7 April 2023) adalah seorang pengacara Amerika Serikat kelahiran Hungaria yang menjadi penyelidik kejahatan perang Nazi setelah Perang Dunia II dan jaksa penuntut Amerika Serikat dalam Pengadilan Einsatzgruppen, salah satu dari dua belas pengadilan militer yang diadakan oleh Amerika Serikat di Nuremberg, Jerman. Ia kemudian menjadi pendukung diberlakukannya rechtsstaat internasional dan didirikannya Pengadilan Kriminal Internasional. Dari tahun 1985 hingga 1996, ia menjabat sebagai profesor hukum internasional di Universitas Pace.

Latar belakang

Ia lahir di Transilvania, Kerajaan Hungaria, dan dari situ keluarganya pindah ke Amerika Serikat saat ia berusia sepuluh bulan. Menurut pengakuannya, keluarganya meninggalkan Kerajaan Rumania untuk menghindari penindasan terhadap Yahudi Hungaria setelah Transilvania diserahkan oleh Hungaria kepada Rumania berdasarkan Traktat Trianon pada tahun 1920.[1] Keluarganya menetap di New York City, di mana mereka tinggal di Lower East Side di Manhattan.[2]
