Bendungan Aswan, atau lebih tepatnya sejak tahun 1960-an, Bendungan Tinggi Aswan, adalah salah satu bendungan tanggul terbesar di dunia, yang dibangun melintasi Sungai Nil di Aswan, Mesir, antara tahun 1960 dan 1970. Signifikansinya sebagian besar melampaui Bendungan Rendah Aswan sebelumnya yang awalnya diselesaikan pada tahun 1902 di hilir. Berdasarkan keberhasilan Bendungan Rendah, maka pada pemanfaatannya yang maksimal, pembangunan Bendungan Tinggi menjadi tujuan utama pemerintah setelah Revolusi Mesir tahun 1952; dengan kemampuannya untuk mengendalikan banjir dengan lebih baik, menyediakan penyimpanan air yang lebih banyak untuk irigasi dan menghasilkan pembangkit listrik tenaga air, bendungan itu dipandang penting bagi industrialisasi terencana Mesir. Seperti implementasi sebelumnya, Bendungan Tinggi memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap ekonomi dan budaya Mesir.

Sebelum Bendungan Tinggi dibangun, dengan hanya bendungan tua yang ada, banjir tahunan Sungai Nil selama akhir musim panas terus mengalir tanpa halangan ke lembah dari cekungan drainase Afrika Timur. Banjir ini membawa air tinggi dengan nutrisi dan mineral alami yang setiap tahun memperkaya tanah subur di sepanjang dataran banjir dan delta; prediktabilitas ini telah membuat lembah Nil ideal untuk pertanian sejak zaman kuno. Namun, banjir alami ini bervariasi, karena tahun air yang tinggi dapat menghancurkan seluruh tanaman, sedangkan tahun air yang rendah dapat menyebabkan kekeringan yang meluas dan akibatnya kelaparan. Kedua peristiwa ini terus terjadi secara berkala. Ketika populasi Mesir tumbuh dan teknologi meningkat, keinginan dan kemampuan berkembang untuk sepenuhnya mengendalikan banjir, dan dengan demikian melindungi dan mendukung lahan pertanian dan tanaman kapas yang penting secara ekonomi. Dengan penyimpanan waduk yang sangat meningkat yang disediakan oleh Bendungan Aswan Tinggi, banjir dapat dikendalikan dan air dapat disimpan untuk pelepasan selanjutnya selama beberapa tahun. Bendungan Aswan dirancang oleh Hydroproject Institute yang berbasis di Moskow.[1]
