Batu pantai

Batu Pantai adalah batu pasir yang berasal dari sedimen-karbonat yang terbentuk di garis pantai yang beriklim tropis dan hangat.[1] Zat kimia yang terkandung di dalam air laut juga memiliki andil dalam pembentukan batu pantai, terdiri dari sementasi butiran pasir di zona intertidal oleh sedimen-karbonat. Hal ini biasa terjadi di semua pantai tropis, dan selama erosi pantai yang menyebabkan batuan pantai sejajar dengan garis pantai.[2] Saat sedimen terkubur lebih dalam, suhu, dan tekanan meningkat, pada akhirnya diagenesis bergabung menjadi metamorfisme.[3] Karena batuan pantai terbentuk secara alami di daerah pantai tropis, batu pantai bisa digunakan sebagai pelindung habitat unik di dalam permukaan laut yang juga disokong oleh pulau karang.

Mayoritas lingkungan di pesisir pantai akan terpengaruh oleh kenaikan permukaan air laut, dan meningkatnya angin siklon, pasir pantai yang berada di terumbu karang yang rendah adalah yang paling rentan terhadap kerawanan dari erosi air laut. Sehingga jenis batuan yang terbentuk di pantai dapat melindungi pulau karang di permukaan yang lebih rendah dari erosi pantai. Batu pantai yang terbentuk dari konsolidasi sedimen-karbonat di antara zona pasang tertinggi dan surut terendah di pantai dapat mengurangi tingkat erosi pantai lebih tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan pasir pantai yang tidak terkonsolidasi oleh sedimen-karbonat. Maka dari itu, batuan pantai memiliki peranan penting dalam mengurangi dampak pemanasan iklim, yaitu naiknya permukaan air laut.[4]
