Batik keraton (dikenal juga dengan istilah batik larangan atau batik vorstenlanden) adalah batik yang berkembang dalam lingkungan keraton, baik Yogyakarta maupun Surakarta. Batik keraton merupakan awal mula dari semua jenis batik yang berkembang di Indonesia. Motifnya mengandung beragam makna filosofi hidup yang banyak terilhami dari kebudayaan Hindu-Jawa. Batik-batik ini dibuat oleh para putri keraton dan juga pembatik-pembatik ahli yang hidup di lingkungan keraton. Pada dasarnya motifnya terlarang untuk digunakan oleh orang “biasa” seperti motif Batik Parang Barong, Batik Parang Rusak termasuk Batik Udan Liris, dan beberapa motif lainnya.[1]

Motif larangan

Dalam Keraton Yogyakarta dan Surakarta Hadiningrat, beberapa motif batik yang dianggap larangan adalah:[2]

Setiap motif larangan juga memiliki rincian penggunaanya, sehingga suatu batik tidak mutlak terlarang. Batik Larangan dalam lingkup keraton disebut juga bathik awisan atau awisan dalem.[3] Semisal motif parang sering dipadupadankan dengan motif batik lain ada yang tetap sebagi motif utama ada yang sebagai isen-isen. Pada beberapa kreasi motif parang masih boleh dipergunakan asal tidak penuh atau dominan pada kain dan bukan disusun dalam struktur diagonal (motif lereng) seperti pada kain bermotif parang biasanya.
